Musical Touken Ranbu: Michinooku ~ Hitotsu Hachisu (Michinooku ~ A Single Lotus)

Here we go! Only a few days after the archive release and toumyu's ninth anniversary (congratulations!)

Michioku, or Michihasu, is a myu I have many conflicting feelings about, both positive and negative. However, I do believe that with the right amount of care in the next Mika-related story myu, the negative can still be cleared. Plus, I'm glad about a lot of things being re-established. The writer does need to step up her game a little on the plot-writing side of things, as well as the understanding-and-respecting-past-myu side of things, but as long as she does, this can still be given a proper place within what was already established.

Keep in mind that these are only the subtitle files, timed and tled to the DMM senshuuraku and the bluray respectively. The archive version will have a talk at the start, so the starting times of the subs will have to be delayed accordingly.

#touken ranbu #toumyu #water's translations #michioku #michihasu #how do I put this #seeing as myu's director Kayano has said in an interview right before Michioku that Kogi and Mika have a special bond #different from other swords-- and then they try to speedrun *Tsuru* and Mika having a what feels like it was intended to be #even greater relationship using a song called Kage Futatsu where KOGI'S signature song from Utaawase was Futatsu no Kage???#I SINCERELY want to believe it's incompetence rather than the writer deliberately pulling the rug from under Kogi's feet #bc the alternative is just cruel #I don't particularly mind the relationship Mika and Tsuru have in this play but I feel that not for a moment Kogi and kara respectively #were considered in the writing #anyway my final verdict is that this myu is what too many people think tsuwa is: the divorce myu (between Mika and Tsuru this time)#in all cases I hope myu can bring Shirakawa Yuki in again like with Datemyu just to offload myu's already deathly busy writer (she's done #5 myus in a month before which is just insane) because I feel this just isn't sustainable with the amount of carefulness a long-running #franchise like myu demands and the *writing* quality (not the production quality AT ALL Michioku's is great) is suffering for it.#like sure Michioku is loaded with references but they're references that either don't serve *Michioku's own* plot or their treatment shows #a lack of understanding of the work it's referencing-- for example Kashuu calling upon atsu's “This is how the shinsengumi fights!” actuall #goes completely contrary to the lesson he's supposed to have learned from atsuibun: that swords aren't disposable and that he has duties as #both soldier (captain in atsu) and as COMRADE and he makes the (already highlighted in Michioku!) dumb decision of butting in without #thinking-- and with that framed against manba's breaking trauma as well! He's supposed to have learned to stay rational and consider both #duties yet here he is ---BECAUSE of the reference--- completely leaning on the pre-atsu-development side of the scale #as if Ishi's words went one ear in one ear out. And yes the scene by itself could've worked as a subversion to show Kashuu makes the #'irrational' decision against what Ishi taught him to consider precisely because he cares for the people he's protecting but there is NO #groundwork laid at all for that in the rest of Michioku! This is what I mean with the carelessness of the references and the lack of #consideration for what prior myus were trying to SAY and ACHIEVE which is insane because she was the lyricist for those #it's more a collage of feelings provided through a set of characters calling back to the scripts of prior myu rather than #a story that evokes feelings bc the humans in it walk forward and act upon-- interact with-- the scenery on the road as left by prior human

I finished posting the unabashedly educational Sword Fic.

It includes a detailed (but hopefully beginner-friendly) explanation of all the steps of making a Nichirin blade from a sunny mountain like Mt. Youkou, a touch of swordsmith and metalworker folk lore (including demons), meta about what must make Kimetsu no Yaiba's swordsmithing methods different from real life methods, some character exploration for Haganezuka and his polishing method, vocabulary and additional resources in the chapter notes, and hopefully, an endearing, silly POV character to learn this all through.

#my fics #SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS #would you like a story about the years of background of this fic?#I was not very well-versed in metallurgy until recent years but my study of the Japanese language goes back to #well #longer than some of you may have been around #I always liked samurai and swords for the aesthetic but started to take more of an interest when I lived in Shimane #and on a day when I had a friend taking me around to rural sites associated with a legendary monster she was like #let's go see the sword museum while you're out here #but that museum was closed (it comes back into this story though)#so we went to a different one that no longer exists but that was my first encounter with how much work it takes to make the sword ore #fast forward years later #I am writing this blog and it becomes known as a fun place to read about Japanese culture as seen in KnY (thanks glad you enjoy)#I decide that I must tell people how hard it is to make the ore and finally visit that main museum on a trip back to Shimane #I collect material and struggle to do more research and wrap my head around it #and I write the first version of Teppi's story that focused mostly on the smelting and glazed over the forging and polishing and stuff #meanwhile I am in a job situation I have already long since wanted out of and soon I want out a lot more desperately #job searches were disheartening but then I found THE ONE I WANTED #and on that first interview when I was already like PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE #they asked if there's a Japanese cultural topic I could suddenly explain in great detail if asked #and without mentioning this blog I said I had recently written up something for fun about tatara smelting methods (and they forgot this)#fast forward again and I very happily got the job and was very nervous as I got the rundown on a very large annual nerd project #and when they announced the topics for that year I saw that tatara smelting methods in the region I knew them from was on the list #and I was like #asudyaiusdyuasdyuahduahduhsdhuPLEASE GIVE ME THAT #and i got it and when I went out there for research people were like #...why do you know all this...???????#and since I dared not mention my KnY blog I was like #...I lived in Shimane...#it seems I broke the tags because the rest of the story got cut off but hi yes you get the idea

oh NO I forgot to bring my copy of a book that I'm currently using to research my next fic and I wanted to read it on the plane

shockingly, my library's overdrive does not contain a book about italian agrarian cults (lmao) so now I'm like... do I spend the $12 to buy the ebook...

#it's not much but like #I already own the book... so like... feels wasteful...#once upon a time I met a guy through work who had been in the same field of study as me back in college #and he asked me if I'd ever read this book #thinking I'd say no and feel small #he didn't actually know what to do when I said yes #like he didn't have any follow-up thoughts or questions #he changed the subject immediately #he clearly hadn't wanted to DISCUSS it he just wanted to make me feel like I wasn't as smart as he was #even though we both had degrees in this subject #and now I think of him and how he almost destroyed an entire writing conference single-handedly every time I look at this book #...lmao.#let's just say I wasn't shocked when A Lot Of Stuff came out about him

#yes this is directly inspired by Syd and Nightmare’s recent animalistic Raava pieces #I’m sorry if you expected something related to the spirit kites but I’m obsessed with my OCs first and foremost #and Suiren is already very feral in most verses. the mermaid AU just adds a biological factor to it #but actually. fun fact. she doesn’t even look as feral as she would be were she a full mermaid #(yeah I’m spoiler alert that’s not really a spoiler given that I drew a lot for this AU last year and already gave it away. Ghazan’s human)#(meaning Suiren’s only half mermaid. I’ve never drawn her in this AU but I imagine Ming-Hua looking ever more monster like)#(bc I dislike when mermaids are just pretty girls with fish tails. give me FANGS and CLAWS and SCALES and GILLS and FINS)#(so yeah. Ming-Hua has a lot more scaled and also dorsal fins running higher up her back. and a more dexterous tail. I should draw her)#but I hope the vibe still comes across. with the blood and all 😁#was it a fish she ate or a too curious human? that’s for me to know and for you to find out #ANYWAY!! some new headcanons about my mermaids based on what you guys said about human Raava:#my mermaids don’t inherently know human language. their underwater communication sounds similar to whale singing #above water it’s more of a chirping noise? though more elongated and melodic than a dolphin’s. something between a trill and a whine #and most don’t have the capacity to speak human language. but sirens have unique vocal chords that allow the siren spell to work #it’s similar to a parrot’s. they’re very good at mimicry. it’s an evolutionary hunting tactic #but they also have more developed brains than a parrot’s therefore can not only mimic but consciously speak #though it takes time to master. like a foreign language #am I implying that when Mingzan met as kids they couldn’t understand each other and Ghazan taught her to speak human? yes. yes I am #because I’m a sucker for language barriers and think that scenario is adorable. fucking sue me.#and obliviously Suiren was taught both mermaid and human. but it was Midori who helped her keep up her knowledge #(look I don’t have that part plotted out yet but Something happens to their parents and they’re left on their own. as a parallel to SotRL)#(also btw Midori was born without a tail but still not quite human. she has scales and gills and ear fins and fangs and glowing eyes)#(and no one but Suiren and Haya know about all that. ngl it makes me want to die a little bit that it's so often trans people who feel that sex is mutable but oppression is always-forever based on asab in ways that allow them to demand that information from other trans people. like it feels fucking bad. it feels bad when it's people holding up someone who posts a lot of selfies as transition goals to a degree they have to clarify what they have or haven't done or what "direction" they're going in, it feels worse when people are out there like "caster semenya is not tma" or whatever the fuck. i am, as always, not a trans woman, but here's a sentiment echoed by many of the trans women around me who log the fuck off, quoted directly from one: "people who draw a clear line where they say that semenya or khelif are tme and then call me tma are just calling me male at this point".

like i get it. i really do. we seek community and shared experiences, and we feel betrayed when people have less in common with us than we thought they did. [*more on this later.] but that's not those people's faults and my god in the case i'm seeing play out on twitter rn this poor person did absolutely nothing to intentionally mislead people, just posted pictures of their actual kid self. who looks a lot like i did, because shockingly enough "we can always tell" doesn't fucking work for trans people either!

on the one hand i move in intersex circles which are unapologetically welcoming in cis "dyadic" people with pcos, because it serves nobody to draw a clear line where mutilation or genetics or some ineffable childhood suffering are what make somebody intersex, especially when most of us (esp in places like nz) have never been karyotyped and are being treated for symptoms without a pinned-down cause anyway. the more of us there are the stronger we are, the more pressure we can exert on a medical profession which doesn't like to consider how common outliers are, how uneasy sex is at all. and then on the other hand there's dyadic trans people on the internet who've yelled me out of spaces because a couple of traumatised incarcerated trans women i worked with as a prison abolitionist assumed i was also a trans woman and i didn't immediately tell them my entire csa-involved history of being sexed in varying ways as an infant and child and/or exactly how big my phallus was at birth or where in my junk config my urethra lives so they could decide i was tme or whatever.

returning to the * for a related but not identical thought: i think presuming shared experiences leads to some fucked shit in general! "oh we all had a radfem phase" or "oh we all were channers" no we fucking weren't and it's particularly obnoxious when me & mine are trying to build trans community locally to organise and resist the growing wave of far-right backlash against our existence, and there's just white people in there on a spectrum from "straight up being antisemitic and trying to get the n-word pass" through "handwringing about how they need to make space for people who aren't politically correct" to "handwringing about how brown people are right to be mad at them but doing shit fuckall". and then the other fucking brown people in the space are on some identity politics shit where they're like "trans joy inherently excludes those of us who could get deported" or "big city white queers are killing us by being visible instead of going stealth bc it stirs up the discourse" or whatever the fuck i've heard pulled out this year. there's a bunch of reasons i primarily organise outside of trans spaces and that's one of them. i've never felt more alone in spaces where people claim we're all the same than being left as the brownest moderator or organiser in a space full of people to whom "this is a safe trans space" apparently means they get to abdicate all other responsibilities not to lapse into presumed shared patterns that are fucking racist or otherwise alienating. i've never felt more alone than surrounded by exclusively trans people who sort people into boxes and assume everyone in those boxes has the transition goals they have. like i was on cypro until it disagreed with me to the point of endocrine crisis and now i'm on t and at both those points people were so fucking presumptive or entitled to my reasons or journey or personal relationship w my body

literally just submitted on (and was invited to consult on) the nz law commission's review of the human rights act and like. it's straight up fucked how many nz trans people fully do not comprehend that any "sex assigned at birth" type definitions fundamentally exclude migrants who have no way of proving it and many intersex people who happen to have been reassigned later or many times or never assigned at all as a baby. we can't make law with this shit and that's why we have to have symmetrical protections for all genders/sexes/expressions/presentations, bc naming and defining a protected class here often leaves the people who already are left out from those shared experiences of marginalisation out in the cold when they face violence
